Through the story of sanctuary caregiver, Maria, the film follows a life devoted to rescuing, protecting, and advocating for chickens, revealing the intelligence, individuality, and quiet resilience of these often-forgotten animals.
“Maria & The Flock” tells the story of Maria Goller, an avian researcher with her PhD in biology, who dedicates her life to caring for the most exploited land animal on planet earth: chickens. By showcasing Maria’s work caring for 150 rescued hens at one of the country’s largest farmed animal sanctuaries (Animal Place), this film illustrates the lasting impacts of the industrialized farming system on the lucky few who make it out alive. It also demonstrates the individuality of a species bred and killed by the tens of billions each year.
