About the Animal Photojournalism Fellowship
The program will support the Fellow in the following:
Mentorship on story development, execution and shooting technique
Insight for investigating animal industries
Post-production
Support for coping with difficult content and stories
Promotion of the story upon completion
A stipend of $7,000 CAD
The Fellow will work for approximately three months and will have periodic mentorship calls with our Founder during this period. Depending on the project timeline, location and subject, there may be an opportunity to work with Jo-Anne in the field.
Timeframe
The Fellowship runs for six months, from April to September 2026. The Fellow may begin their fieldwork anytime between April 1 and June 30, and all deliverables must be submitted by September 30, 2026. This includes time to plan, shoot, edit, and submit the final project deliverables.
Note: There is an opportunity for some flexibility in the timeline.

Eligibility
The Fellowship is open to photographers anywhere in the world with a track record of shooting high-quality animal photojournalism and who would benefit from professional guidance on their craft.
Applicants must apply as individuals and be able to communicate in English at an intermediate level (translation tools may be used to help with this). Because Fellows are ambassadors of We Animals and animal photojournalism, Fellows who embrace vegan values and a non-speciesist philosophy are preferred.
Proposals
Applicants must have a clearly defined project pitch that would benefit from We Animals’ support. The project’s focus must be on farmed animals or animals used for food, have a beginning and an end date, and must include a preliminary field plan detailing how the location(s) will be accessed. This can be a project that you have already started and need support to finish. As this is a photography Fellowship, mentoring and feedback will only be given on photos (though supplemental video content is welcome).
Fellowship content: Applicants agree to license the content created during the Fellowship to We Animals under our current licensing terms.
