Pitch a Story to We Animals

by | Jun 30, 2026

Read this post in Spanish.

Our next story pitching window is open July 1-31, 2026.

At We Animals, we use photojournalism to advocate for animals with the mission to create ethical and cultural shifts in society and empower human capacity for compassion and change. As a nonprofit photojournalism agency, we carefully consider which stories we support based on their potential to create meaningful impact.

We invite photojournalists to submit photo and/or video story pitches that tell compelling stories and can drive awareness, influence audiences, and support change.

Priority Themes

We are currently soliciting pitches for stories on the following themes:

  • Environmental Impacts of Industrial Animal Agriculture: Stories documenting the environmental consequences of industrial animal agriculture, including impacts on land, water, air quality, biodiversity, wildlife, and climate.
  • Public Health, Communities, and Human Rights: Stories exploring the connections between industrial animal agriculture and human well-being, including impacts on workers, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, public health, labour conditions, and human rights.
  • Animal Sentience and Behaviour: Stories that reveal the emotional, cognitive, and social lives of animals used in food production, research and testing, entertainment, traditions, and other human-controlled systems. We are particularly interested in stories highlighting the individuality, relationships, and lived experiences of animals whose lives are rarely seen by the public.
  • Change and Progress for Animals: Stories documenting meaningful efforts to improve the lives of animals, including policy reform, legal developments, shifts in industry practices, advocacy campaigns, community initiatives, and technological innovation. Priority will be given to stories focused on systemic change rather than sanctuary life.

What Makes A Strong Pitch

  • Impact: Why does this story matter, and why now? We prioritize stories that raise awareness, offer new insights, and have the potential to inspire action.
  • Originality: What makes this story unique? Strong pitches offer fresh perspectives, untold stories, or innovative approaches to familiar issues.
  • Media Strategy: Which media outlets, journalists, or platforms are likely to be interested in this story? Consider both traditional and non-traditional channels that could help expand its reach.
  • Partnerships: Are there NGOs, advocates, researchers, or legal teams working on this issue? Consider how your visuals could support existing campaigns or broader advocacy efforts.
  • Budget: Provide a realistic, itemized budget. As a nonprofit, we value careful stewardship of resources and appreciate accurate cost estimates.
  • Access and Logistics: Explain how you will gain access to key locations, subjects, or events. Include any permissions secured, anticipated challenges, and plans for overcoming them.
  • Include the Details: Provide clear, thorough information and complete all fields in the application form. Tell us who, what, where, when, why, and how, along with any relevant context that will help us evaluate your proposal.

Think beyond the story itself and consider how it can engage the public and foster meaningful progress for animals. Pitches that integrate a strategic approach to media and/or identify clear opportunities for partnerships are more likely to be successful, helping ensure that every story we support has the greatest possible impact.

We are especially interested in stories from photojournalists in Asia and Latin America, and about stories related to farmed chickens and fish.
