As the world’s leading animal photojournalism agency, We Animals (WA) advocates for animals through photojournalism. Our global investigations and stories expose our complex relationships with animals, create ethical and cultural shifts in society, and empower human capacity for compassion and change. To support our mission, we investigate industries, mentor photographers, operate a stock site to share our visual content, and engage with media and NGO partners to shift attitudes, industries, and policy.
We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Social Media Coordinator to manage and grow our online presence across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of social media trends, content creation, community engagement, and analytics. This role is key in supporting brand awareness, audience engagement, and lead generation through compelling and consistent digital storytelling.

Type of employment: Part-time permanent position at 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with a flexible hourly schedule.

Annual Salary: $36,720 to $38,780 annual salary based on 24 hrs per week, based on experience (prorated from $61,200 to $64,633 at 40 hours/week)

Purpose
The Social Media Coordinator is responsible for elevating We Animals’ global profile by translating powerful photojournalism into compelling digital narratives. This role drives the organization’s advocacy and fundraising goals through strategic content creation, community management, and data analysis across all social platforms. By growing our online presence and engaging diverse audiences, this position plays a critical part in shifting public attitudes and fostering a compassionate society free from animal exploitation.
Responsibilities
- Develop WA’s social media strategy to support our 2026-2028 strategic directions across all platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, YouTube, and potentially TikTok in the near future). This includes awareness raising, promotion, and fundraising.
- Set goals for our social media accounts in collaboration with our Marketing Manager and Fundraising team.
- Research and stay current on social media trends, platform updates, and emerging technologies to incorporate into WA’s social media strategy.
- Work from and continue to establish WA’s social media guidelines and all associated accounts (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, YouTube).
Content Creation and Engagement (60%)
- Plan and manage social media calendars across platforms aligned with strategic goals, campaigns, exhibitions, and calendar days.
- Collaborate with the MarComms team to align social content with project objectives and brand messaging.
- Translate photography and photojournalistic work into platform-appropriate narratives.
- Write precise, journalistic, and well-researched captions
- Make image selections appropriate to the story and platform
- Directly work on creating visual assets for social media (images, videos, reels, stories) in collaboration with content creators and editors.
- Create engaging content to promote our Stock Platform as a resource to animal advocates, media, and campaigners.
- Directly work on creating visual assets for social media (images, videos, reels, stories) in collaboration with content creators and editors.
- Use WA’s visual resources to create engaging multimedia content for our social accounts to lead the conversation on animal photojournalism, including inviting others to use our stock, highlighting our field work, and fostering support from our followers.
- Monitor social channels daily, respond to comments/messages promptly, and engage with followers to build community.
Support campaigns, influencer partnerships, paid social campaigns, and promotional initiatives. - Collaborate with the Communications Manager to ensure a consistent brand look and feel across platforms.
- Work closely with the Fundraising team on campaign concepts and content creation to meet departmental goals.
- Keep up-to-date on animal protection issues, successes, and other news.
Reporting (~10%)
- Track and analyze performance metrics (reach, engagement, conversion, etc.) and prepare regular reports with insights and recommendations.
Other (~5%)
- Occasionally liaise with volunteers as needed.
- Attend various remote meetings, including: monthly WA team meeting, MarComms team meetings, and 1:1s with supervisor.

Qualifications
- 2–3 years of experience managing professional social media accounts.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills (writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a keen eye for detail).
- Proficiency in social media management and analytics tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Later, Meta Business Suite).
- Basic graphic design or video editing skills (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) are a plus.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and optimize content strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to work remotely effectively.
- Ability to travel once per year (max.) for our annual team retreat.
- Values alignment: a demonstrable understanding of, and commitment to, our organizational philosophy regarding animal advocacy. You must be comfortable working in an environment that challenges the status quo of human-animal relationships.
- An understanding of the animal advocacy and/or photojournalism world would be an advantage.
